Solid vs. engineered hardwood flooring

Solid vs. engineered hardwood flooring

A good portion of the floor shopping experience is how certain floor coverings size up against one another. This is especially true with hardwood flooring, where differences are subtle yet essential, so read along with us in today’s post to find out more about these differences.

Solid or engineered wood floors?

There are some differences you will want to know about when it comes to these two flooring types. Here are some quick facts that can help you make a reasonable decision.

  • Construction – Solid wood is a through-and-through- construction, while engineered floors have a plywood layered backing with a veneer of natural wood attached to the top.
  • Lifespan – Solid wood flooring can easily surpass 100 years of life, while engineered options average about 30 years, both with required maintenance.
  • Durability – Both floors offer excellent durability, especially when properly stained and sealed. However, engineered products can be installed below grade, while solid wood cannot.
  • Refinishing options – Solid wood can be refinished several times. Engineered flooring can be refinished up to several times, depending on the thickness of the natural wood veneer.
  • Stain color options – Solid floors offer more stain color options, especially with unfinished materials, while engineered products provide a much quicker installation.
